School-wide Reading Assessments

What is an “IRI”?
An IRI, or informal reading inventory, is an informal reading test that is given individually to a student to help determine that student’s independent, instructional, and frustration reading levels. It is made up of grade level word lists and grade level story passages. Each story passage is followed by comprehension questions, which determine how well the student understands the story. Elementary students (grades 2-5) are given an IRI in the fall and spring of each year. Middle school (grades 6-8) and high school (grades 9-12) students are given an IRI in the spring of each year.

What is “STAR Reading”?
The STAR reading test is a computer-based reading assessment given individually to each student to help determine that student’s instructional reading level. This test measures students’ knowledge of vocabulary in-context. Items include sentences and short passages that are missing a word. The student is presented with possible answers in a multiple-choice format. The primary advantage of using this test is that it is computer-adaptive. As the student answers items, the computer automatically adapts the test level to match the student’s current knowledge. Elementary students are given the STAR reading test in the spring of each year. Middle school and high school students are given the STAR reading test in the fall and spring of each year.
