About Us…
Welcome to the Margaret S. Sterck School, Delaware School for the Deaf (DSD), the only school in the State of Delaware for Deaf and hard of hearing children in need of comprehensive services including visual access to language for learning. The Delaware School for the Deaf provides an educational program for Deaf and hard of hearing children from birth through twenty-one years of age. DSD also serves approximately 16 deaf/blind students within the K – 12 program. The program at DSD includes preschool through high school education. Included among the dedicated DSD staff are teachers, paraprofessionals, speech and language therapists, school psychologists, an educational audiologist, educational interpreters, a school nurse and residential advisors. The Christina School District curriculum and state content standards are used in the development of each students’ Individual Education Plan (IEP) and to guide instruction for each student. Work experience/job placement, technology, career education and pre-vocational courses are also available to students. Based on the individual needs of students, DSD implements a mainstreaming program in which students are accompanied by educational interpreters to academic and vocational classes in other schools within the Christina School District and also within the New Castle County Vocational School District. Since its inception, DSD has been committed to using best instructional practices based on current research.
